An Introduction to Cybersecurity

I created this post for the Studyblr Masterpost Jam, check out the tag for more cool masterposts from folks in the studyblr community!

What is cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is all about securing technology and processes - making sure that the software, hardware, and networks that run the world do exactly what they need to do and can't be abused by bad actors.

The CIA triad is a concept used to explain the three goals of cybersecurity. The pieces are:

Confidentiality: ensuring that information is kept secret, so it can only be viewed by the people who are allowed to do so. This involves encrypting data, requiring authentication before viewing data, and more.

Integrity: ensuring that information is trustworthy and cannot be tampered with. For example, this involves making sure that no one changes the contents of the file you're trying to download or intercepts your text messages.

Availability: ensuring that the services you need are there when you need them. Blocking every single person from accessing a piece of valuable information would be secure, but completely unusable, so we have to think about availability. This can also mean blocking DDoS attacks or fixing flaws in software that cause crashes or service issues.

What are some specializations within cybersecurity? What do cybersecurity professionals do?

Where do cybersecurity professionals work?

I view the industry in three big chunks: vendors, everyday companies (for lack of a better term), and government. It's more complicated than that, but it helps.

Vendors make and sell security tools or services to other companies. Some examples are Crowdstrike, Cisco, Microsoft, Palo Alto, EY, etc. Vendors can be giant multinational corporations or small startups. Security tools can include software and hardware, while services can include consulting, technical support, or incident response or digital forensics services. Some companies are Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs), which means that they serve as the security team for many other (often small) businesses.

Everyday companies include everyone from giant companies like Coca-Cola to the mom and pop shop down the street. Every company is a tech company now, and someone has to be in charge of securing things. Some businesses will have their own internal security teams that respond to incidents. Many companies buy tools provided by vendors like the ones above, and someone has to manage them. Small companies with small tech departments might dump all cybersecurity responsibilities on the IT team (or outsource things to a MSSP), or larger ones may have a dedicated security staff.

Government cybersecurity work can involve a lot of things, from securing the local water supply to working for the big three letter agencies. In the U.S. at least, there are also a lot of government contractors, who are their own individual companies but the vast majority of what they do is for the government. MITRE is one example, and the federal research labs and some university-affiliated labs are an extension of this. Government work and military contractor work are where geopolitics and ethics come into play most clearly, so just… be mindful.

What do academics in cybersecurity research?

A wide variety of things! You can get a good idea by browsing the papers from the ACM's Computer and Communications Security Conference. Some of the big research areas that I'm aware of are:

cryptography & post-quantum cryptography

machine learning model security & alignment

formal proofs of a program & programming language security

security & privacy

security of network protocols

vulnerability research & developing new attack vectors

Cybersecurity seems niche at first, but it actually covers a huge range of topics all across technology and policy. It's vital to running the world today, and I'm obviously biased but I think it's a fascinating topic to learn about. I'll be posting a new cybersecurity masterpost each day this week as a part of the #StudyblrMasterpostJam, so keep an eye out for tomorrow's post! a couple of years ago i tested to see if you could move pokemon to sword and shield without the use of pokemon bank in case that ever shuts down.

there is one way i found and thats by using pkhex to get the pk data, converting it with a program to pk8 file and then injecting it into one of those trade bots you can find in a lot of places, mostly discord. the pokemon will be exactly the same stats and ot and everything and be moved up.

like yeah its inconvenient but because TPC made pokemon bank require online and didnt give us a wireless option to move pokemon over this is the best option for now.

i hope in the future we get some homebrew that does this better.

i’ve been thinking about my mystery gift volunteer booth bc like. i have the ability to run most of the original gen 3 and 4 gift distribution softwares, like the actual ones nintendo used back in the day, but i’m not able to do that with gens 1 and 2. however pokemon data back then was really simple and we have a lot of documentation of what gen 1 and 2 distributions were like, plus some of them were literally handled by loading a bunch of event mons on a cart and trading them to people over link cable, so it wouldn’t be out of the question for me to do the same. ayano has even written code that can generate gen 2 PCNY mons into the save file’s party with the click of a button so it could probably be adapted to fill an entire save’s PC instead lol. i don’t think turnout for og gen 1/2 carts would be huge but it would still be a neat option maybe

on that note i think it might be fun to give out gen 1 mews that are custom to the convention? like the TID/OT name could reference the con. literally making a new mew event in 2024 lmao. could do this for gen 3 too but i’d have to learn a lot more about gen 3 pokemon save data structure and probably write more custom software so idk about that

Vilnius prosecutor's office closes investigation

Forensic medical report in Shelby Lynn case suggests cause of accident without external influence

As lawyers of Till Lindemann (see our press release of 08.06.2023) we inform about the latest developments:

The public prosecutor's office in Vilnius (Lithuania) has discontinued the investigation initiated by Shelby Lynn's complaint, thus confirming the previous decision of the local police. Shelby Lynn had claimed that she had been drugged on the occasion of the Rammstein concert in Vilnius on May 22, 2023. The next day, she had noticed numerous hematomas on her body, which indicated an alleged physical abuse. Shelby Lynn had made these photos public, along with a video, via Twitter.

The prosecutor's office in Vilnius justified its decision to discontinue the case by stating that after questioning a witness and analyzing data and documents, no objective factual evidence had been found to support Shelby Lynn's statements.

In order to further clarify Ms. Lynn's allegations, we initiated our own investigations on behalf of our client. The Institute of Forensic Medicine at the University Hospital in Cologne was commissioned to evaluate the photographs and video clip published by Ms. Lynn to determine the possible causes of the injuries shown there. In particular, it was to be assessed whether the injuries could be attributed to physical abuse. According to the expert opinion prepared by the director of the institute, Prof. Dr. Markus Rothschild, the recordings suggest that the most probable cause is an accident without external influence. Specifically, the expert opinion states.

"Overall, the morphology and localization of the documented injuries speak rather for an accidental occurrence, without which an external influence can be completely ruled out from the outset on the basis of the findings alone. However, from a forensic medical point of view, the findings are not typical for an external impact.

In addition to what has been presented under 4.1, there are in particular no indications of sexual violence as the cause of the injuries documented in the witness. It is true that here, too, sexual assault or rape cannot be ruled out on the basis of the injury findings alone. Conversely, however, there were also no indications of sexualized violence."

In the meantime, the lawyer Prof. Dr. Björn Gercke, who was commissioned by our client with his criminal defense, was able to inspect the file of the preliminary proceedings conducted at the Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office. The inspection confirmed previous press releases, according to which the preliminary proceedings are not based on criminal charges filed by alleged victims. Complainants are uninvolved third parties who have based their complaints exclusively on media reports and accusations in the social social networks. Furthermore, the inspection of the files revealed that there is no objective evidence to date that would suggest that our client committed the crime.

As already announced in the press release of June 8, 2023, we are taking action on behalf of our client against inadmissible reporting and untrue statements of fact in the media and on social networks.

Among other things, we have applied to the Hamburg Regional Court for an injunction against the reporting in SPIEGEL No. 24 of June 10, 2023. We complain about the violation of our client's privacy, the publication and dissemination of untrue factual allegations and inadmissible suspicious reporting. A decision is expected in the next few days.

The YouTuber Kayla Shyx (civil name: Kaya Loska) was warned in connection with her YouTube video from 06.06.2023. In response to this, she issued a cease-and-desist declaration with a penalty clause to our client on two points. Insofar as the requested cease-and-desist declaration was not submitted, we are applying for the issuance of an interim injunction on behalf of our client.

In Switzerland, among others, Ringier AG was warned because of the reporting on www.blick.ch from 18.06.2023 (title: "Recruited Alena M. also in Bern women for Lindemann?"). Following the warning, the publisher issued a comprehensive cease-and-desist declaration to our client. The article can no longer be accessed via the website.

When I bought my copy of Alpha Sapphire it had a previous owner's save data, but the file had the default name 'Brendan' and like a dozen Pokemon. Like this guy had one badge. Josh the Boyfriend did the busywork of getting that file to the name rater, and from there I named them all and shoved them into the bank. I just beat the Delta Episode in my own file, so now I'm finally putting those original refugees back in. Kojiki finally gets to meet his big sister Mae. She's named and modeled after the Sapphire player character because her OT is 'Brendan' and I felt like that fit. Although, Hitorigami, who was the sacrifice from that file, is future-themed so maybe all those Pokemon should also have outfits that match? Or not. I don't know yet. So this is just a tentative design, I just wanted to commemorate Mae coming home.

Description: SCP-ALY is a collection of artificial life forms created through gemstones filled with a strange energy. These gemstones are able to project hard light constructed bodies that allow the SCP-ALY to take on various forms, in recent years for whatever reason they take on more humanoid forms despite their masters doing otherwise. Each SCP-ALY gemstone seems to be based on an actual gemstone found here on earth with very few that can be identified from other worlds. Whether or not this is a strange coincidence or not is unknown. 

Each SCP-ALY instance can change their shape at will though the only way for them to make a form permanent they must have their current form destroyed and regenerate a new form. Typically having a limb cut off or the whole body torn up is enough to destroy the hard light constructed body of an SCP-ALY instance forcing them into a sort of hibernation. In this hibernation state their consciousness will retreat into their gemstone and they will construct a new body from scratch that will either have a majority or only minor similarities to the previous form but must never be the same. There are also cases of SCP-ALY instances that take on more monstrous forms and become feral like as a result. Why this is the case is unknown, however the process must be done delicately and slowly with the utmost mental clarity and precision. If rushed in any way the SCP-ALY instance will end up constructing a nonsensical and unstable body. 

With all this in mind it might seem like the SCP-ALY gemstone is a computer though it's more like a brain given that all SCP-ALY instances have emotions. Despite living to serve a purpose each one has feelings, desires, and hobbies that they enjoy and can sometimes irregulate with their assigned jobs. Why this would be the case of a tyrannical species that cares only for conquest and perfection is unknown. 

With their hard light construct bodies SCP-ALY instances are stronger than steel yet able to move their bodies with incredible speed. Not only this but they can adapt to any form of gravity and will never suffer damage from radiation or disease. Though they can become mentally exhausted or discomfort, again why their creators would allow such flaws to exist is unknown. 

Though they do possess the anomalous ability to manifest their own unique weapon from their SCP-ALY gemstone. Shockingly quite a few can even use their gemstone to store a nearly infinite amount of items within them. They all typically possess a unique ability that either corresponds with their gemstone SCP-ALY type or can be completely unique to them alone. For example sapphire SCP-ALY gemstones mostly possess ice related abilities, ruby SCP-ALY gemstones possess fire related abilities, and amethyst SCP-ALY gemstones possess energy based abilities. 

Each variant of SCP-ALY gemstone is created for a different purpose and is used to fulfill a different job within the empire. All of the SCP-ALY serve this empire with SCP-ALY-Blue, SCP-ALY-Yellow, and SCP-ALY-White on top. SCP-ALY-Blue is a large and strange jellyfish-like instance that sometimes takes on the form of a hooded woman with long white hair. Regardless of whatever form she’s in she is incredibly mentally unstable and bipolar, easily changing from crying with sadness to stern and angry within seconds. Her gemstone is that of a blue diamond and possesses the ability to create hard construct light weapons of any kind, large energy blasts, and can manipulate the mental state of anyone around her with her fellow SCP-ALY instances taking most effect. SCP-ALY-Yellow is more insectoid in appearance and rarely takes on the form of a tall woman with an almost militaristic appearance in clothing and hairstyle. She has the power to create lighting that destabilizes all forms of technology including her own SCP-ALY subjects should they displease her. It's even possible for her to forcefully and permanently change the current forms of an SCP-ALY instance. 

These two instances are the figure heads of the SCP-ALY empire which is determined to wipe out all organic life in the Milky Way galaxy. Naturally they see the Foundation and the rest of the ACPA as a nuisance given us hindering a number of their invasions. Under no circumstances is SCP-ALY instances or their technology to be underestimated as most if not all show no mercy to organic life, as such no mercy should be granted to them. Especially given their direct hatred towards Earth itself which seems to be connected to SCP-ALY-White.

Of course, above Blue and Yellow, there is also SCP-ALY-White who is supposedly the main authority of all SCP-ALY instances even above the “great diamond authority” which governs the empire of SCP-ALY. However, no one has seen her at all and it's a mystery if she is even alive. Debian 12 xfce ~~~~ let's go~~~~~

I complained about debian not having wifi drivers upon live cd boot, apparently that was by design for the older versions as (i think?) device drivers like that might be proprietary and non-free. and debian ships usually free and open source packages....

so that was by design~~ they changed it I think in debian 12, which I'm late to finding lol.

I missed the transparency thing xfce does sometimes~~~ I like xfce's compositor~~ and for some reason I don't like KDE when I tried it before and hadn't tried it since~~

could've tried it but just jumped on xfce desktop with debian 12, especially cause I've come to like thunar file manager over dolphin (? was that kde's?)

just got it up and running~~ tho I forget (or don't know) how to update the system yet.... mint has an update manager, or it's a cinnamon desktop thing..... idk.... tho I'm guessing "sudo apt-get update"

I like the splash screen and grub menu~~~ and (not that linux mint debian was unstable cause it wasn't~~) I hope debian is really stable~~ ot that's what I read anyway~~

and my function keys still work, lol. unlike upon fresh windows install~~

and I can still access the other hard drive~~ but for some reason upon unmounting it it says that there's still something going on or data is being written to it, but then it seems to unmount fine anyway~~ so I hope nothing is going wrong already~~ lol

i feel a lot more confident tackling a tileset/map engine in javascript ever since making my GB/C trader. to get text like the OT and trainer names to appear dynamically on screen during the trading animation, i made large vertical spritesheets of every character in the game ordered by the ID of those characters in all three language sets. then to print the text to the screen i simply pass the desired string (determined from reading save file data) off to a function that checks what ID each character in the string has and then uses the ID to jump to the Y coordinate by multiplying the ID by 8 since each character is 8 x 8 pixels. it then cuts the 8 x 8 sprite out of the tileset and starts placing them in order next to each other on the HTML canvas, starting at whatever coordinates i designate. it can print from both left to right and right to left, though i didn't run into any use case for right to left here.

you can see this system more clearly in this test page i made that isn't public, where i can just type in any text and what tile i want it to be printed to, and it will:

it should not be that difficult to adapt a similar system for mapping tilesets, though it'd be a bit more complex for obvious reasons. i'd need to make different layers so that things could be in front or behind each other, collision toggle, etc. this part does not sound intimidating to me however - the part that would take some learning and tinkering on my end would be actual player traversal, assuming parts of the map are cut off by the sides of the game screen. like, how do i render the map based on the camera, how do i animate things smoothly sliding around as the player moves? this is rhetorical, i'm sure i'll figure it out if i sit down to do this, just haven't thought too hard about the logistics yet
